About this blog

Image courtesy of Christopher Lin
This blog hopes to accomplish several things. First, it attempts to better present information about Critical Mass in Baton Rouge than the current MySpace page.
Second, this blog simply (and hopefully temporarily) hosts the domain name, criticialmassbatonrouge.org.

This blog also hosts topical multimedia content about Critical Mass in general.

Several active bicycle advocates in Baton Rouge have expressed an interest in seeing this effort become part of B.R.A.S.S, a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 grassroots organization dedicated to:

  • promoting bicycling and walking in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area;
  • making these modes of transportation as safe and convenient as possible, and;
  • educating the public of the associated environmental and health-related benefits
Eventually, somebody will make a post on the B.R.A.S.S yahoo group, discussing this conceptual merger.
Until then, please feel free to add content here. We have set up a Picasa (Google) web album and have plenty of storage for photos, which can be placed on any page.

If you would like access as a blog author and access to upload images to the Picasa web album, email me at criticalmassbatonrouge@gmail.com

Couple of interesting articles about bicycle planning in Oregon

A couple of interesting articles about Baton Rouge trying to learn about better integrating bicycle use (among other things) from Portland OR.
From the Daily Reveille

  • Baton Rouge leaders are looking to Portland, Ore., for some inspiration on how to make the city better.

    A group of 150 Baton Rouge area leaders, including Chancellor Sean O'Keefe, traveled to Oregon for a four-day trip that concluded this past Wednesday. . .

    . . .City planners set out to make Portland more environmentally friendly in 1968. Today, bicycle and walking paths border the streets, and efficient light rail commuter lines provide for convenient commuting.
and the Advocate
  • Talking to a Baton Rouge Area Chamber information-gathering delegation, Portland ambassadors — from renowned planner John Fregonese to bike-riding politician Rex Burkholder — have been uncannily frank about how hard residents have fought to secure regional successes. . .
  • . . . residents along the way began demanding more in the way of public transit and bicycle lanes that have aided growth in the city center.
